DPT selection criteria

DPT Selection Criteria

Panoramic radiographs should only be taken in the presence of specific clinical signs and symptoms

 Assessment of a bony lesion or tooth whose size and/or position precludes its complete demonstration on intra oral radiographs such as third molars

 Prior to surgery under general anaesthesia

 Prior to a dental clearance or multiple dental extractions where the state of the dentition would make intra oral radiography very difficult

 As part of an orthodontic assessment where there is a clinical need to know the state of the dentition and the presence/absence of teeth. The use of clinical criteria to select patients rather than routine screening of patients is essential

 History of trauma to the lower jaw, assessment of known jaw fracture (excluding parasymphseal fractures)

 Assessment for implants in multiple sites

 TMJ dysfunction only indicated if there is a history of trauma preceding onset, or recent evidence of progressive pathology. Most patients attending consultant clinics for TMJDS will fall into this category. If clinicians wish to see open and closed views of the condyles they should request TMJ views open and closed, note however on this view you will only visualise the condyle

 Patients who have trismus or are unable to tolerate an intra-oral film where radiological investigation is necessary for the management of the patient

NB: DPT’s will now not be undertaken as part of an assessment of periodontal bone support unless they fulfil any of the above criteria

1/2 DPT’s and field limitation will be utilised dependent upon the clinical details provided by the referring clinician i.e. if you only give clinical details relating to the lower right you will only receive an image of the lower right.
