Specific Operative Protocols
The specific requirements in addition to the previous, for the following adult operations are:
Dentoalveolar Surgery
1. Radiographs, usually an OPG +/- periapicals
2. Drugs
- Dexamethasone 8mg iv on induction + orally 12 hours later
- Metronidazole 200mg PO TDS / Amoxycillin
- Corsodyl m/w 10ml QDS
- Regular analgesia eg Mefenamic acid or Ibuprofen
3. TTAs—Metronidazole for 5 days/ Amoxycillin, Corsodyl and analgesia
4. Information sheet regarding post-operative problems.
Orthognathic Surgery
1. Radiographs—OPG, lateral skull views
2. Models, orthognathic tracings, intermediate splints
3. FBC +/- U&E (check with anaesthetist), G&S blood (+/- clotting screen)
4. Drugs
- Dexamethasone 8mg iv on induction then 8mg 12 hourly for 24 hours PO
- Cefuroxime 750mg iv on induction then 750mg QDS for 24 hours
- Metronidazole 500mg iv on induction then 500mg TDS for 24 hours
- Corsodyl m/w
- Diclofenac 100mg pr 18 hourly and Pethidine 50-100mg im 4 hourly/PRN
- Any oral preparations as above
- Maxalon 10mg iv/im 6 hourly/ PRN
5. TTAs—Antibiotics for 5 days and Corsodyl mouthwash
6. Dietician—appointment whilst on ward
7. Radiographs—OPG, Lateral skull before discharge
8. Review—by orthodontist before discharge
