Inappropriate Tasks for SHO’s

SHO’s should not be expected to carry out tasks or procedures in which they have had no previous experience or training, or do not feel competent to perform safely. SHO’s should at all times be aware of which senior staff are available for help and advice.

The Working Group agreed that dentally qualified SHO’s should not be expected to obtain informed consent for complex surgery or cases where they do not understand the surgery and possible complications. Which cases fall into this category must be established by discussion with senior medical staff. Additionally, informing family members of bereavement should not be the task for the SHO in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

There are no circumstances in which singly qualified SHO’s in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery should be required to perform breast, pelvic or rectal examinations.
