Pre-operative investigations

¨ Over 40 years—FBC

¨ Over 50 years-FBC and ECG

¨ Over 60 years-FBC, U&E, CXR and ECG

If in doubt, check with anaesthetist doing list.

 

Younger patients with cardiorespiratory disease may require appropriate investigations such as blood gases and peak flows etc.

 

Other tests may include:

¨ Afro-Caribbean—FBC, Sickle test

¨ Arterial blood gases—severe respiratory disease, ICU, significant metabolic derangement

¨ Cardiac or Respiratory syndrome—ECG

¨ Coagulation screen—liver disease, haemorrhage, sepsis anti-coagulation therapy

¨ Diuretics/Digoxin/ Diabetic—U&E

¨ High alcohol intake—INR +/- LFTs, Gamma CT

¨ History of jaundice—Hepatitis B screen

¨ Random blood glucose—known or suspected diabetic

¨ Respiratory function test—severe respiratory disease, scoliosis surgery, asthmatics need a peak flow recorded

¨ Significant rheumatoid arthritis—cervical spine views

¨ Thyroid function test—thyroid surgery or if thyroid replacement treatment recently changed

Obtain a copy of the anaesthetic recommendations as to the necessary investigations. As a general rule, the following are typical ‘routine’ elective pre-operative investigations for a fit person.
