Pre-operative Checklist

1. Consent

2. Investigations—bloods, radiographs, CXR, ECG, PEFR

3. X-match blood

4. Drug sheet

5. IV fluids

6. Patient starved? Check anaesthetic department protocol on NBM periods—usually 4-6 hours minimum

7. Inform anaesthetist of any significant medical of drug history—preferably at pre-clerking stage

8. Mark side of operation, if applicable, with an indelible marker—e.g. TMJ surgery

9. Check splints, radiographs, models and tracings are to hand and that the nursing staff are informed they should accompany the patient to theatre

10.         Inform theatre / surgeon / secretaries of changing to operating list.
