Surviving The Ward Round

Preparation should include:

1. Get to work early

2. Check all investigations and radiographs are to hand

3. Are the nursing staff concerned about any of the patients? Any major events that occurred overnight?

During the main ward round:

1. Present each patient in turn, summarizing treatment performed, any problems encountered and current status

2. Note any changes to the treatment plan in the notes or any significant findings and future treatment plans.

3. At the end of the round ensure that the senior member of nursing staff is aware of any decisions made

4. Be prepared to return to the patient in order to clarify any point that is not clear to them

During all ward rounds:

1. Check temperature, pulse and blood pressure

2. Check fluid balance and oral intake.

3. Check the prescribed drugs have been administered.

4. Enter all findings in the notes.

These are generally divided into business rounds on your own or with the registrar and main rounds with the relevant consultants. They should be performed regularly and as often as required. Try to enlist the help of the nursing staff on rounds.
