Nasogastic Intubation |

1. Can be placed via the nose or mouth to empty the stomach for feeding. Size 16 is large, 10 small bore. 2. Inform patients of what to expect and select a cool (less flexible) tube. Sit the patient up. 3. Lubricate the tip and insert via the nostril advancing towards the occiput. 4. Advance the tube into the oropharynx and then the oesophagus as the patient swallows (with or without water). If unsuccessful try the other nostril and then oral insertion. 5. Confirm the position of the tube in the stomach by aspiration (litmus paper) and / or auscultation. Obtain check chest X-rays before commencing any feed. |
