Male Urinary Catheterisation |

1. Ensure that everything is the hand before starting. Another pair of hands is useful. 2. Use a strict aseptic technique with gown and sterile gloves. 3. Drape the pubic area. 4. Cleanse the penis and glans with chlorhexidine or sterile saline solution, retracting the foreskin if necessary. 5. Pass 10ml of Lignocaine gel into the urethra and apply pressure to the meatus to prevent premature escape of the gel for 2—3 minutes. 6. Lubricate a 14G or 16G Foley catheter. 7. Holding the penis firmly in the left hand, pull up towards the ceiling and gently insert the catheter into the urethra. If resistance is encountered change the angle of the penis or use a smaller catheter. Occasionally a sterile plastic pair of forceps may assist with the guidance of the catheter. 8. Place the end of the catheter in a receptacle to catch the stream of urine. Send a sample for culture and sensitivity. 9. Fill the balloon with the required volume of water (printed on end of catheter) and pull gently on catheter until slight resistance is felt. Spigot the catheter or connect directly to a catheter bag noting residual volume of urine. Finally REPLACE THE FORESKIN TO PREVENT THE DEVELOPMENT OF A PHYMOSIS. |
