Appraisal

Appraisal is an organised series of meetings between trainee and trainer (educational supervisor) which focuses on the trainee and their personal and professional needs. It is not an assessment, and should be properly planned during the course of a job.

The first meeting should occur soon after a junior starts a new post to establish previous experience, aspirations, training opportunities and expected standards. This should culminate in an educational plan that sets realistic objectives for the forthcoming period. The educational supervisors will also ensure that trainees’ portfolios are kept up to date.

Each SHO should have:

¨ An induction programme at the beginning of each appointment

¨ Participate in audit sessions set aside for this purpose

¨ Have ready access to a library and study facilities

¨ Have as a minimum an appraisal two times per year. Additional appraisals may be required during the appointment of a trainee

¨ Have access to a structured training programme which has generic and clinically-based content. The teaching periods may be organised in different ways—in department, within a rotation, or regionally on a day-release basis, or a combination of these.
