Individuals who hope to enter specialist training programmes will be expected to have passed this assessment. The examination is designed to test candidate knowledge and understanding of all aspects of the syllabus in a structured manner.
The examination is in three parts. Parts A and B are intercollegiate and are held in all four centres—Edinburgh, England (London), Glasgow and Ireland (Dublin). These examinations are held twice a year, in April and September, at the same time and using the same question papers. Part C is a collegiate examination and success at this final stage will determine the Royal College of Surgeons/ Physicians in which the membership will be awarded and affiliation established. Part C is held twice a year, typically 4—6 weeks after the Part B examination.
Training Requirements
For entry to Part A candidates must have completed at least twelve months of general professional training and for Part B and C, a minimum of twenty months. Following the successful completion of all parts of the examination and twenty-four months of training in approved posts, the candidate may apply for the award of the Diploma from the College at which Part C was taken. It has been agreed by the General Dental Council that the MFDS or equivalent will be an essential entry requirement to SAC approved specialist training programmes leading to the award of a Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training (CCST) and entry on to a specialist list.
Reciprocity
It has been agreed that the MFGDP Part I will have reciprocity with MFDS Part A and the Dental Faculties and the Faculty of General Dental Practitioners are committed to increasing convergence between the two examinations. This reciprocity does not apply retrospectively to holders of DGDP Part 1 taken prior to September 1998. This agreement was reached in order to provide maximum flexibility for the graduate who may be unsure in the first years after qualification whether to follow a career in specialist practice or general practice.
Exemption
Exemption from MFDS Part A and B has been agreed for holders of MRCS. Exemption from MFDS Part A and B has been agreed for those who held an MGDS or MCCD before September 1998 for a two year period until September 2000.
Applications
Application forms are available on request from the Royal Colleges. Completed forms should be submitted to one of the four Colleges. Applications for Part C must be made to the chosen College for affiliation. Evidence will be required of appropriate training and the appropriate examination fee should be submitted. Be sure to check the final date of application for examinations.
