Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy (PEG) |

PEG tube: Silicone/ polyurethane inserted into stomach.
Indications: 1. Major Oral Surgery 2. Tumours of head and neck 3. Neurogenous dysphagia +/- risk of aspiration 4. Multiple trauma
Contra-indications: 1. Poor wound healing 2. Sepsis 3. Immune suppression 4. Blood coagulation 5. Peritonitis, ileus, ascites, acute pancreatitis 6. Peritoneal carcinosis
Pre-op PEG insertion: 1. Discontinue H2 blockers and antacids at least 24 hours pre-op 2. Give appropriate antibiotic cover
Post PEG insertion: 1. Give 24 hours before feeding is commenced 2. Write up appropriate liquid drug preparations 3. Dietician will write up appropriate feed
PEGs can be inserted or removed by endoscopy. There are often specific forms which need to be requested in advance. |
