Hypothyroidism

Thyroid deficiency lowers the metabolic rate, leading to weight gain, decreased themogenesis, decreased sweating and dry skin. Decreased Beta-adrenergic responsively is manifested by a slowed heart rate, slowed movement, speech and thought.

Sedatives may precipitate myxoedema coma with diazepam, opioid analgesia, other tranquilizers and  general anaesthesia. Local anaesthesia is preferred.

Hypotension and hypoadrenocorticism—may be associated with hypothyroidism. Anaemia and ischaemic heart disease are often complications.

Eruption and shedding of primary teeth—delayed because of stunted growth and marked retardation in the growth of the jaws

Myxoedema Coma— presents with hypothermia, cardiac failure, hypoventilation, hypoglycaemia, confusion and coma.
