Investigations for Day Case patients

Specific Investigations:

 

¨ Hb                       if history of anaemia, or pale

 

¨ U&E                     if over 70 years old . If on medication affecting biochemistry e.g diuretics, digoxin or steroids, if the patient has renal disease or diabetes

 

¨ ECG                     if over 60 years of age If history or examination suggest cardiac disease, e.g. hypertension, angina, previous MI, rhythm disturbance, heart murmur, cardiac drugs Significant systemic disease with associated cardiac involvement, e.g. diabetes, rheumatic fever etc.

 

¨ Coag screen         if on warfarin or bleeding disorder

 

¨ Sickle Test           any susceptible racial group, if status known

                                       NB can check register by telephoning Haematology Lab

 

¨ Chest X-ray          no indication (except recent immigrants from areas with endemic TB)

             If examination indicates chest X-ray, the patient is probably not suitable for day surgery.

 

¨ Peak flow            if asthma

 

¨ O2 sats                 if any doubt about respiratory function

 

¨ Warfarin patients are not suitable for daycase

Investigations should be clinically guided. For most patients complying with selection criteria, NO routine investigations are necessary. Management is unlikely to be altered if the patient has been clinically assessed to be in good health.
