The interview

Before the interview

¨ Find out about the staff qualifications and publications. Ensure you know if the hospital or department has an internet web page

¨ Find out about the clinical and other responsibilities, and the potential of the post

¨ Meet potential colleagues and find out about their professional interests

¨ Determine the conditions of service such as duty rotas, study leave, holidays, accommodation etc

¨ Try and meet the person you are replacing, as he or she is likely to have the most useful information about the job.

¨ Never be dissuaded from applying by rumours about possible better applicants.

¨ If you are short-listed, you may need to revisit to clear up any points you are unclear about, but be careful not to appear to canvass.

At the interview

¨ Be sure to arrive in good time

¨ A well prepared applicant will find the interview easier and is often more successful

¨ If there is a problem attending for the interview, make every effort to communicate personally with the principal or head of department

¨ Dress smartly—a suit is often required

¨ Think beforehand about obvious questions—

Why do you want the particular job?

Where do you see your career going?

Why did you take the job at your last hospital or practice?

When do you intend to take the MFDS examination?

How do you see your role in relation to members of staff?

What would you like to ask the committee?

¨ The main purpose of the interview is to find the right person for the job. This is by assessing the applicant’s ideas, personality, ability to relate to colleagues etc

¨ Act naturally, be honest and courteous.

¨ Discuss points, but never argue

¨ Good luck!
