Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) course

Venue: Various across the country, I attended the Nottingham QMC course

Website:  http://www.rcseng.ac.uk/courses

Verdict: A 2.5 day course designed for predominately for doctors. Can attend as either a provider or an observer. Very practical and highly interactive, combining lectures, discussions, interactive tutorials, skill teaching and simulated patient management scenarios. Skills include including placing a chest drain, tracheostomy, orotracheal intubation and diagnostic perineal lavage. Keeps to the basics of A, B, C and you are tested at the end of the course by way of a MCQ paper and a ‘Moulage’ scenario. Intensive, challenging and very enjoyable! However, there is some dispute as to whether dentists are able to gain this certificate—so make sure you check that the course organiser is aware of this.
