Lifelong Learning—Key Points: ¨ Applies to all registered dentists ¨ 250 hours of continuing professional development (CPD) over 5 years ¨ This includes of at least 75 hours of verifiable CPD, the rest can be general CPD ¨ Dentists are required to maintain their own CPD records and are subject to random testing by the Committee of Postgraduate Deans ¨ Failure to comply with CPD and Lifelong Learning may lead to erasure from the Dental Register
Verifiable CPD 1. Publicly funded courses organised by Postgraduate Dental Deans and Directors 2. Other courses including educational meetings, conferences and events approved or provided by bodies such as the BDA, GDPA, the Royal Colleges, the Faculty of Dental Practitioners (UK) and members of the Council of Postgraduate Dental Dean and Directors 3. Vocational Training or General Professional Training study days 4. Approved peer review and clinical audit 5. Interactive distance learning with verifiable outcomes 6. Postgraduate courses leading to degrees or diplomas
General CPD: 1. Independent study of professional literature 2. Multimedia learning 3. Staff training 4. Background research
Clinical Audit as part of CPD: From 1st April 2002 it will be a requirement that all dentists (principals, assistants and VTs) who provide general dental services take part in at least 15 hours of clinical audit during each 3-year period.
